ZIG (Louis Gaudin, ?-1936)
614. Chandelier Showgirl.
9 x 12 in./22.8 x 30.4 cm
Signed gouache, silver ink and pencil design.
In 1936, Zig died prematurely–as did Benda–although his exact age was never established. The artist had been a habituÈ of Montmartre cabarets where he sang and recited at the drop of a beret. Here, he presents with an outfit only a showgirl could love. To call it an outfit is almost a misnomer though, seeing as it appears to consist of little more than pewter latticework and frothy pink garlands. Could it be that this was intended to adorn his favorite music hall clotheshorse, Mistinguett? It’s hard to say, seeing as the only hint provided in the design are the words "moss rose,” which is an old fashioned garden rose. Even though there’s certainly nothing old fashioned about this get-up.
