WILLIAM WELSH (1889-?)
603. Pullman/Winter Resort. 1934.
20 7/8 x 26 7/8 in./53 x 68.2 cm
Charles Daniel Frey Co., Chicago
Cond A-/Slight tears and stains at edges. Mounted on board. Now this is what I think of when a winter resort pops to mind–snuggly warm and fashionably earth-toned clothing, an abundance of the frozen white stuff, curious, yet civil wildlife and a photo-worthy hoar-frosted bush trapped somewhere between a snowflake and a fantastic outcropping of coral. And as evidenced here and in the previous design, Welsh’s svelte wayfarer had an easygoing, nearly Disneyesque affinity with the indigenous animals of the regions through which she passed. Kentucky-born Welsh was trained throughout the United States and in Paris as well. Accomplished and lauded as both a painter and an illustrator, his work can be seen in the Chicago Art Institute, in the mural decorations for the Men’s Cafe in Chicago’s Palmer House Hotel and on numerous covers of the Woman’s Home Companion. And for Pullman, of course.
