American industrialist George M. Pullman (1831-97), began producing sleeping cars in Chicago in 1858 after a stint as a cabinet maker, converting old railroad coaches in order to facilitate long-distance traveling, in addition to designing a dining car. Some five years later he built the Pioneer, the first modern sleeping car. Gaining great wealth from his invention, he founded the Pullman Palace Car Company in 1867, unveiling his crowning achievement the following year, the luxuriously and meticulously appointed "club car.” These fancy carriages and fine service became synonymous with luxurious travel and the following five posters are part of the rare series of Art Deco Welsh designs promoting the Pullman during the mid-1930s, focusing on the glamorous traveler and their destinations rather than highlighting the opulent Pullman accommodations. And though a "Winter Resort” usually conjures up significantly snowier images than the one seen here, this willowy siren gracefully blends into the tropical surroundings of her Froridian Eden.
