Autographs
Revolutionary General
and First Governor of th State of New York

GEORGE CLINTON, Here the Revolutionary War general, and first governor of New York, signs the commission of an ensign in the militia.
Document Signed, as Governor, partially-printed and accomplished in manuscript, commissioning one Patrick G. Hildreth an ensign; 1 page, 15' x 9.5', Albany, March 14, 1804, Very Fine. With embossed stamp. some very light toning, affecting a 3' x 6' block, does not distract from the overall quality of this pleasing, boldly signed document. In part: 'THE PEOPLE of the State of New York...reposing Special trust and confidence in your Patriotism, Conduct and Loyalty, as in your Valor, and readiness to do us good and faithful service...do appoint and constitute you...ensign of a Company in the Second Regiment of Militia...whereof Peter Van Zandt, Esquire, is Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant...'

Plainspoken and practical, this seven-time Governor of New York played a leading role in the imperial crisis with Great Britain, the American Revolution, the Confederation period, the struggle over the Constitution, and the development of a working government and the party system. In 1805, he became JeffersonÕs vice-president - perhaps the only job he ever did badly.
