Time is money. And as we all know from Citibank billboards, that expression is an insult to time. Perhaps not when it comes to preparing an adequate air defense, however, since those wings buy one time. Clever wordplay and impetuous graphic make this a wonderful continuation in the Villa series for the French Aeronautic Propaganda Department. Following the bitter experience of World War I, the French wanted air power, and the government set up a special division to sway public opinion to its cause. The 1921 design cartoonishly portrayed the short-visioned skeptics of the plan to their earlier counterparts–embodied by the fictional character named Joseph Prudhomme–who didn’t think the trains would ever catch on (see PAI-XXXIII, 604). Four years after the poster seen here, Villa would create another poster that shows Prudhomme’s ghost watching in wonder as his bumbling son hurries to catch a flight (see Looping the Loop, 88).
