The chaotic Communist rule of Hungary–from the Soviet Republic’s ascendance on March 21, 1919, until the Romanian occupation of Budapest on August 4, 1919–is frequently referred to as the Republic of Councils. During this brief period, a cell of designers calling themselves the Nyolcak (Group of Eight) created the most authentic and artistically valuable posters of this revolutionary agitative era. Tuszkay was a member of this group of posterists who, along with activists and other artists, put the Soviet "isms” to the service of political propaganda. And rather than put words in his mouth, it would be best to step aside and simply give a translation of his all text–save a Red Star in the background–poster (All shaded poster text will appear here in capitol letters and boldface): "THE PROLETARIAT IS WINNING!!! The Hungarian proletariat stands rock solid by the Russian-Soviet Republic. We are strong, because the advancing senses of the tormented people are on our side. Our collective production will solidify the future’s anarchy-free economy. The rewards of Communist productivity: PROSPERITY, CULTURE, EQUALITY. We will prove that productivity doesn’t require oppression, tyranny, profit, greed and hazardous imperialism. WORKERS! BROTHERS! PROLETARIANS! Hold out in the struggle against class oppression. We will build a happy worker’s society. Victory is certain, but the price is struggle. FIGHT FOR IT!!!” A truly rare historical document!
