An evocative pair of decorative panels from Truchet illustrating the well choreographed practices of early-20th century Parisian socialites. The first shows "an interesting view of the cancan from the rear. From this vantage all we get is a hint of the swirl of white petticoats, yet it is enough to communicate the zest and energy of this French specialty. The title given to the artwork goes back to the name of the original dance for four couples from which the cancan evolved” (Gold, p. 139). The second tableau shows a "nicely conceived scene in a well-patronized cafe [with] women dancing together, a normal practice at the time.Truchet was primarily a painter, but he also mastered the techniques of illustration, etching, and lithography and produced a few posters of undoubted merit. He found his inspiration among the habitues of Montmartre, and this is a fine example of the results” (Gold, p. 139).
