This magnificent poster, an artistic and lithographic tour de force, was Toussaint’s first. It publicizes the magazine of Le Sillon, one of the many artists’ groups that bred in the rich cultural ferment of 1890s Brussels. Sillon means furrow, cruser son sillon, to plow one’s own furrow–to make one’s own way in the world–which was the aim of this group. Thus, Toussaint depicts an allegory of the harvest of grain that will spring from this work. Credit for capturing the fine color nuances of this "delicious watercolor in soft tones” (Affiches EtrangËres, p. 108) is shared by Toussaint’s friend, O. de Rycker, the master lithographer of Brussels, "who could achieve the nuances of luminous mother-of-pearl (Jacqmotte) or colored dreams (Le Sillon) . . . Toussaint could also compose in sonorous letters like sounds of a gong (Le Sillon) or in a continuous and modulated sound like music (Jacqmotte)” (Belle Epoque 1970, p. 84).
