Here Lautrec shows us the comedian Caudieux striding off the stage past the prompter’s box with a smirk that says he’s satisfied with his performance. By tilting the perspective so that we see the stage lines at a downward angle, he gives the composition added dynamics (as he did in Eglantine, No. 571). This, he’s telling us, is a confident, vain, domineering performer, a stage presence to be reckoned with. Feinblatt calls this “a study in dynamic motion and concentrated energy . . . and his bustling sweep across the boards is an unparalleled rendering of movement among Lautrec’s posters” (Wagner, p. 20).
