This design advertises the serialization in the newspaper Le Matin of an 1891 book, “At the Foot of the Scaffold,” written by a former prison chaplain. The grim-visaged prisoner being led to the guillotine strikes the keynote, with the dark silhouette of the detachment of the witnessing soldiers, the somber priest and the executioner adding dramatic overtones. All known copies of this image are trimmed at the bottom.
