In response to Pearl Harbor, Congress established the Women's Army Corps, for auxiliary noncombatant duty, in 1942. Since then 365,558 women have joined up and, with the assimilation off the WACs into the Army in 1978, now also serve in combat. General Clarke’s career was emblematic of this transition.
