(1842-50) 27G P.E. G$1 BECHTLER. The Bechtler mint was a private venture conducted at the abode of Christopher Bechtler, and operated by himself and the Bechtler family. The activity was highly esteemed in its time, well covered in press and financial papers, and served its purpose in providing circulating coins in that part of the South. There were no mints in North Carolina or Georgia until 1838, therefore the Bechtler enterprise, which began in 1830, filled an important function. Washington, D.C. did not object to the Bechtlers, but allowed the private mint to continue in full operation, although now and again mention of it was made in the Annual Report of the Director of the Mint. This is one of the standard issue Dollars struck in greenish yellow gold with slightly rippled effect from the dies but sharp lettering on the avowedly simple obverse & reverse design. (#10040)
