Is it possible that Barbara Stanwyck ever wore a dress this short onscreen as the one her graphic self is sporting in this poster for the Frank Capra directed "Ladies of Leisure”? Translated as "Lilies of the Asphalt” for it’s Swedish release, the film is based on the Milton H. Gropper/David Belasco play, "Ladies of the Evening,” which was a hit on Broadway in 1924. The movie tells the tale of a "golddigger” who finds true love; the play, however, didn’t bother with euphamisms–the heroine was a prostitute. Hollywood, ever mindful of the ever-threatening Production Code used the ambiguous term to make it seem like women of this ilk were on the lookout for men with money, not really selling their bodies, which is a rather subtle distinction that the filmmakers managed to pull off. This was Stanwyck’s second feature film in what proved to be a long and fruitful career.
