1915-S Panama-Pacific Gold $50 Octagonal. Satiny and lustrous orange-gold with pale rose and lovely iridescent gold toning highlights, a spectacular Gem of this important rarity. Almost identical in design to that on the round-format $50 coins, although somewhat reduced in size to properly fit the coin's octagonal shape: Eight tiny dolphins have been added to the border design on each side, outside the circle surrounding the legends, one dolphin at each angle. On the obverse is a head of Minerva wearing a stylized Greek helmet of the Corinthian style; on the reverse, an owl and pine branch with pinecones. This version, made to the extent of 1,500 pieces, was slightly more popular with the public, due to the distinctive octagonal shape which reflected the historic $50 slugs of 1851-1852. When final accounts were tallied, it was learned that only 645 pieces of the original 1,500 had been distributed. However, in those days, collectors (and non-collectors) had poorer means for storing their coins; many of the pieces were actually mishandled or carried as pocket pieces, accounting for the actual worn specimens as well as those which got knocked about. This is one of the very select Gem MS65 survivors from the low mintage, and a marvelous, indeed, an impressive specimen! (NGC serial #567430-010) (#7452)
