An all-star episodic film featuring most of the available directors–most notedly Ernst Lubitsch–and actors–Gary Cooper, Charles Laughton and W. C. Fields to name a few–on the Paramount lot, based on the Robert D. Andrews novel, "Windfall.” The first episode, named only "Prologue,” introduces an ailing tycoon who gets tired of his greedy relatives waiting around for him to die, so he decides to give away million dollar checks to randomly selected people from the telephone book. The following eight installments follow these lucky recipients and run the gamut from the humorous (a meek clerk who gives his boss a Bronx cheer by way of notice; a man who works in a china shop and is mercilessly docked every time he breaks an item who smashes every piece of merchandise on his way out the door) to heartfelt and tragic (the streetwalker who uses her money to rent a hotel room, enjoying the luxury of being able to sleep gloriously alone; a man who is about to receive the a death sentence who endorses the check to his long suffering wife). Rohman, a highly productive Swedish graphic artist with his own studio, executed the body of his work between 1916 and 1949.
