Textiles
c. 1915 Textile with Selected Flags, and Women, of the World, Choice Near Mint.
22.5” x 22.5” white cloth with colorful prints of women in ethnic costumes, waving the flag of their home country. Each figure is set off by dark blue stitching arranged in a rectangular pattern. At the center is a 46-star U.S. flag--without a female figure or costume. Along the edges are red, white and blue print stripes, with bows at each corner and in the middle of the stripes. The other countries represented are: Greece, Scotland, England, Ireland, Egypt, Cuba, Spain, Japan, Austria, Germany, Russia, Canada, Italy, and France. The Japanese figure wears a kimono, the Russian figure is dressed like a cossack, the Scottish figure has a kilt and plaid cloth, etc. Formerly part of the “Mastai” Collection--as indicated by a red-stamped notation along the bottom right edge. Minor staining to cloth along right edge and other portions along the borders. An interesting historical view of selected flags, ethnic costumes, and women, from the pre-World War I era.
