JOHNNY MARR - Set of Mesa Boogie Amps

A set of four guitar amps owned and used by Johnny Marr during his time in British post-punk band The The. Marr used these amps extensively throughout the The The Versus The World global tour in 1989 and 1990, and were used in combination with Marr's 1988 Fender Stratocaster guitar (see lot 557) to create his signature sound.

The set includes a Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp (serial number #SP1189); a Mesa Boogie Quad Preamp (serial number #0-828); a Mesa Boogie Simul-Class 295 Power Amp (serial number #51074); and a Mesa Boogie Footswitch (serial number #F-925). Some knobs and switches on the amps are marked with lines and crosses to show Marr's preferred settings for live use; these were added by Marr or his guitar tech Phil Powell. White tape strips on the underside of the footswitch read "Spare" and "B". The exteriors of the amps display scuffs and marks from extensive tour use. The metal handles on the protective wooden enclosure for the Simul-Class 295 Power Amp exhibit corrosion.

The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Marr's stage manager and guitar technician Richard Henry, with four photographs of the equipment in Marr's Crazy Face Factory studio and a printout detailing the amp's provenance, compiled by the previous owner. Dimensions (largest amp): 46 cm x 53 cm x 22 cm (18" x 20 3/4" x 8 3/4")

Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.

Additional Provenance:

Mesa Boogie amps are referenced in the "Marr's Guitars" section on page 19 of The Guitar Magazine Vol. 1, No. 1. Marr also mentions his amp setup on page 80 of the January 1990 issue of Guitar Player magazine.
