Surely one of the most extraordinary posters created for the French Line. The jewel in the line’s crown, the Normandie, is seen bows-on (as in the somewhat more famous poster by Cassandre–see PAI-XXXI, 132); it’s flanked by the Champlain and the Lafayette, the three steaming toward us in glorious union, like LibertÈ, EgalitÈ and FraternitÈ. Their reflection in the water, a second glance reveals, are the Eifel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe; the clear message is that these ships are equally deserving symbols of France; that they are, as labeled, “France Afloat.” A splendid image.
