1795-1796 British Almanack Textile, Very Fine.
21” x 22,” toned to an even brown color, rough at the edges and with some splits along the vertical centerfold, all reinforced long ago on the back with a variety of tape and cloth. A fabulous piece, printed on fine linen, with great vignettes at top. On the left and right, scenes from “The Glorious Defeat of the King of Prussia Before Warsaw by the Polish Patriots Under the Command of Their Immortal Leader Kosciusko.” At center, “Mr. John Horne Tooke Who Was Indicted For High Treason Addressing Himself to His Independent Jury After His Acquittal.” Below are each of days of the months for 1795 and 1796, with some notations of special days. Tooke was an English politician and philologist who was arrested in a Tory crackdown and charged with high treason. His trial lasted six days, but he was acquitted by the jury in only eight minutes!
This is a wonderful piece, not only for display purposes, but because of the rarity and quality of this textile piece from the late 18th century.
