1840, Harrison Campaign Staffordshire Sugar Bowl with Transfer Print of “Log Cabin" Scene, Choice Near Mint.
4.5” high, 6.5" long sugar bowl and lid, covered with lovely pink transfer prints of a log cabin, hills in the background, a “hard cider" keg, and two farmers walking on the road in front of the field. The lid and the rim have portrait busts of “Maj. Gen. Harrison" in uniform. Bottom has printed design series title: “Log Cabin." Historical Staffordshire prints were successful campaigning tools for presidential candidates such as Harrison, who sought to emphasize his connections to the common man and his military career. This log cabin design was one of a few possible scenes that “19th century politicians were so ready to associate themselves with," according to Snyder (“HISTORICAL STAFFORDSHIRE," 2nd edition, 2000). Small chip along top rim of bowl, otherwise exceptional.
