THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923)
545. ¿ la SantÈe.
15 1/4 x 19 1/8 in./38.7 x 48.5 cm
Signed oil on canvas, Framed.
"The principal characteristic of Steinlen’s work is his profound study of physiognomy and the reproduction of truth in the pose and details. . . . Steinlen is distinguished by the sociological beauty of his art . . . in the popular types he has chosen; he has discovered general traits, psychic nuances that distinguish one man from another” (Steinlen, p. 137). So commented Maurice Lenoir in the December 15, 1895, edition of Le mirliton and his observations hold true in this jubilant toast, a bar scene not so much distinguished for its separation of social types, but instead the moments in which delineation blurs into a postimpressionistic amalgam of honest spontaneity.
