1861-1862, 24 Parts in 18 Installments of the Magazine 'National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans...From Original Full Length Paintings by Alonzo Chappell,' by Evert A. Duyckinck, Very Good to Very Fine.
Each volume measures 11.5' x 8.75,' original paper covers, some in excellent condition, some with separated pages and covers and some chipping. These 18 volumes represent installments 1 through 24 of this important, historic work. WeÕve handled several of the bound volumes in the past, including one offered in this sale, but these are the first weÕve seen of the magazine-type versions sold on a subscription basis. According to the 'Conditions of Publication' in the advertisement on the back cover of the first issue: 'The Work will be Issued in Semi-Monthly Parts, each Part containing Two superior full-length Portraits from engravings on Steel, with Sixteen quarto pages of Letterpress elegantly printed on Superfine Paper. The Work is guaranteed to be completed in not exceeding Sixty-two Parts, 25¢ each, forming 2 handsome 4to vols.' Installments 1 through 12 were individual Parts; from thence onward, each installment contained two Parts. 45 prints of the expected 48 prints are included (three were probably pulled and framed by a previous owner). The remaining prints are all in good condition and will make nice display pieces or store stock. Doubtless unique or nearly so.
