</b>

<b>1861 Book, 'National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans...From Original Full Length Paintings by Alonzo Chappell,' by Evert A. Duyckinck, Very Good.</b>
11' x 9,' 292 pages plus 80 prints. Internally sound, but with worn covers and spine. This is Volume 1 (of two volumes -- the other is not included in this lot). The value of this book comes from the 80 prints and numerous biographies inside, all of famous Americans, including such names as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Israel Putnam, Horatio Gates, Daniel Boone, Alexander Hamilton, and other men who contributed significantly to our nationÕs history during the period of the American Revolution. Each print is in excellent condition, with none of the waterstaining and foxing that so often plague these old, historic books. Some biographies are missing a corresponding engraving (i.e., Benjamin Franklin), but all of the important ones (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, etc.) are here, so this may just have been one of the idiosyncracies of this book, which appeared in a number of different iterations over the years. This is a potential money-maker for the person willing to make the effort to split the book up and offer the prints on an individual basis. Even at a cheap $10 a print, this volume is worth $800, and there are many prints that are worth considerably more.
