1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. As was true of the 1907 Indian designs for the Eagle, the present piece was the product of Theodore Roosevelt's association with Augustus Saint-Gaudens, America's most distinguished sculptor at the time. It was originally planned that the entire range of American coinage would be changed, from the lowly One-cent piece through the Double Eagle. In correspondence, Augustus Saint-Gaudens felt that the 1857 Flying Eagle Cent was the finest motif found on any American coin. It is interesting to note that this same motif he used on the Double Eagle offered here. Only about 11,250 High Relief $20 gold pieces were made. These required special equipment to manufacture and so, as it turned out, were a very limited issue. Handsome as this coin is, it thoroughly meets or surpasses all of the criteria for the MS64 grade including clear-cut relief, satiny swirling luster on both sides, exceptionally nice rims with a "fin" or wire edge, and overall aesthetic appeal.
