Savignac is the enfant terrible of French poster art, who, along with the late Bernard Villemot, has had more impact on that country’s graphics of the past 40 years than any other artist. As for his style, there are no displays of technical virtuosity that might compete with the wit–only disarmingly simple, almost childish brushwork, basic colors and uncluttered design. The former pupil of Cassandre explained his method this way: “If I express myself with gags, whims and pirouettes, if my posters are graphic clowning, it’s first of all because the public is so bored in its daily routine that I think advertising should amuse them” (Weill, p. 303). To that end, he shows a green-capped chap getting back in touch with nature to the extreme in this poster for a Dijon leisure time fair. In addition to putting you back in touch with your primordial side, this event also promises a daily ticket giveaway to a London soccer championship.
