1861-1864 Books, “NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY OF EMINENT AMERICANS,” First Edition, by Evert A. Duyckinck.
The complete Two Volume Set, First Edition, 11” x 8.75, printed by Johnson, Fry & Company of New York, containing a total of 119 steel-engraved portraits of famous Americans, with text by Evert A. Duyckinck Copyright dates of 1861 for Volume 1 and 1864 for Volume 2. Perfectly matched bindings, original blindstamped purple morocco, gilt-lettered and stamped spines, raised bands. Leather and cloth binding, worn and rubbed but in excellent, sound condition. Internally, the pages and plates are in great condition, with minimal toning, no foxing, and no waterstaining. The eminent Americans include orators, statesmen, naval and military heroes, jurists, authors, and others. A few of the names included are: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, John Adams, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, John Paul Jones, Anthony Wayne, Baron Von Steuben, Lafayette, Oliver Hazard Perry, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Abraham Lincoln, David Farragut, Ulysses S. Grant, and many more. This is a potential moneymaker for the person willing to make the effort to split the book up and offer the prints on an individual basis (a mere $20 per plate places the total value at over $2,300). Here we offer the full and complete set, in quite excellent condition, the nicest we’ve ever offered. (2 volumes).
