Autographs
Salmon P. Chase Exalts All of CaliforniaÕs Gold Rush Era Virtues !

SALMON P. CHASE.
Autograph Document, unsigned, but apparently in ChaseÕs handwriting, as he ends with, '...take the advice of your friend ÔChase,Õ' on unlined, pale blue paper, January 30, 1849, 8 pages, 7.5' x 8.5,' Very Fine. Loosely bound with dark green string and a thin, brown wrapper. This speech was apparently addressed to the 'enlightened and patriotic citizens of Capt. Rinton,' location not listed. On the last page Chase also addresses ' E.A. Jackman,' who was apparently the main object of this speech, which is an exaggerated rumination on the virtues of California. In part: 'California lays in the latitude of South Carolina, the climate is mild and pleasant, they have no cold winters as you have here, vegetation flourishes the year round with a perfect looseness. As for sickness there is no such a thing known there, no one has ever died within the memory of the oldest inhabitant.... They raise beets that weigh 4 tons. Potatoes as big as a pick measure. Grass from fifty to sixty feet high, and Trees so tall it takes two men to see the top.... Gold is agriculture, arts, sciences, manufactures, and west india goods and groceries, for gold will purchase all these things. If anything, gold is more plenty than dirt, its as plenty as rocks are here...'
Sharp, crisp brown ink writing, on toned pages with intermittent minor stains. Minor wear to edges. Terrific content!
