1. Closing cut from a letter, “Very Respectfully / S P Chase / Secretary of the Treasury,” 1.75” x 4.75,” backed by heavier paper, Very Fine. Chase was a U.S. Senator and Governor of Ohio. As Lincoln’s Secretary of the Treasury, he originated the national banking system and issued the first greenbacks; his image is on the $10,000 bill. As U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Chase presided over the 1868 Senate impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson.
2. Partial Document Signed “O. Ellsworth,” with “pay the Contents to Col. Joel Jones” in his hand, no date (notes on verso are dated 1783, Hartford), 2” x 8,” Fine. Light toning and show-through from the back. Ellsworth was a delegate to the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention; he served as Chief Justice of the U.S. from 1796-1800.
