Lot 518: Former Slave, Now Civil War Soldier
Black History
Former Slave Grants Power of Attorney to Collect Bounty as a Union Soldier!

June 6, 1865, Power of Attorney Appointed by an Enlistee of Co. 'F' 7th Regiment United States Colored Troops, and Receipt, Lot of 2, Maryland, Choice Fine.
Partly printed document, completed in manuscript, 11' x 8.5,' by Isaac L. Wilson, 'an enlisted slave colored man,' who appoints Daniel T. Orem his true and lawful attorney, to collect his bounty due for his service in the army. Accompanied by a fifty dollar receipt for the bounty due Wilson. Signed after the end of the Civil War, Isaac Wilson had apparently enlisted when he was a slave and was now due payment. Both documents are toned and worn, with edge splits, ink erosion, and revenue stamps. The receipt has chipping along the upper left corner. Magnificent historical documentation that former slaves fought for their own liberation as part of the Union Army. A unique set of items. (2 pieces)
