RiviËre, a leading print maker and illustrator, was, along with Willette, Caran d’Ache and Steinlen, associated early on with the Chat Noir cafe and journal founded in Montmartre by Rodolphe Salis in 1881/1882. As secretary and one of the illustrators of the journal and as inventor of the venue’s shadow theater, RiviËre exercised a great deal of influence on the artistic environment of the Chat Noir. This work hung, specifically, on the second floor.
