March 1863, Four Letters from A Union Soldier to His Family, North Carolina, Choice Extremely Fine.
Autograph Letters Signed by 'B.W. Charles,' dated March 20, 28, and 30, 1863, 8' x 4.75', each 4 pages, doublesided, from Newbern and Plymouth, NC. Blue-lined, fine laid paper with embossed makerÕs mark, and light-brown ink writing, normal folds. Very interesting content, describing war conditions in North Carolina and his impressions. At one point, the Union soldier states his disbelief that African Americans would ever serve the Army well: 'I donÕt think they will ever succeed much enlisting negroes. They will not enlist unless drove to it. and then they wont be worth much...' Includes two original envelopes with 'Newbern' postal cancels, addressed to family members in Massachusetts. (4 pieces)
