The World War I term "doughboy” is a familiar one, but just in case you weren’t familiar with its origin, here’s a quick historic side note: During the war, women serving overseas with the Salvation Army searched for simple ways to boost troop morale. One way was to provide them with small creature comforts from "back home.” And the most popular expression of that was the classic doughnut. Seeing as these fried dough goodies generated such a response, the nickname was born and stuck. The United War Work Campaign was an initiative put together to raise awareness and funding for nonmilitary relief services, namely the Y.M.C.A., the Knights of Columbus, the Salvation Army, the Jewish Welfare Board, the American Library Relief Association, the Y.W.C.A. and the War Camp Community Service.
