Broadsides
Mexico Fights Against French Invaders!

June 13, 1863, Mexican Broadside: “ALCANCE AL NUM. 27, DEL ECO DEL COMERCIO / OCUPACION DE MEXICO,” Printed by J. M. Blanco, Veracruz, Choice Extremely Fine.
17.25” x 11” gray newsprint, with beautiful typeface in the headlines. This extensively detailed broadside explains in Spanish that the French army has been occupying the capital of the Republic the last three days, and that they are continuing to march on other towns. Benito Juarez has a force of 6,000 men and artillery, stationed at San Luis Potosi, and has declared that town the new Capital. Additional details are provided in a long columnar story, dictated by the senior commander, “Numero 25.” The second column has a briefing by battalion commander “G. Munier” about the occupation and resistance; and the bottom of the column, “A ultima hora” (the final hour) describes more recent details: “The Capital was occupied ... by 600 men... on foot. General D. Mariano Salas has been given control of the district, the forces of Juarez that left Mexico took three diverse [battles]: Queretaro, Morelia, and Cuernava. Juarez with the Government, the Congress, the Offices and some troops, took the road to Queretaro.” 3,000 men marched on Morelia, took 500 prisoners, six pieces of artillery and more. Very interesting tales about how Mexican forces resisted the French colonialists. Lightly toned sheet, normal folds, a few small edge splits, and a torn upper righthand corner.
