Broadsides
Defend the City of Tampico against Invaders

July 18, 1862, Mexican Broadside Urging Citizens to Defend the City of Tampico against Invaders, by Demetrio Chavero, Choice Very Fine.
12.5” x 8.5” broadside on newsprint: “EL CIUDADANO GNERAL DEMETRIO CHAVERO, COMANDANTE MILITAR DEL DISTRITO DEL SUR DE TAMAULIPAS, Y ENCARGADO DEL MANDO POLITICO” [The Citizen General Demetrio Chavero / Military Commander, Tamaulipas Southern District, ...]. Written in Spanish, in this broadside, General Chavero addresses citizens of Tampico to protect the city against Maximilian’s invading army. Chavero calls on residents to defend the honor, independence, and liberty of the Mexican Republic, and that as long as there are sons, there will be Mexican honor to defend. Maximilian colonized Mexico shortly after the Spanish conquerors were kicked out, but he was ultimately defeated as well. Signed in print by Chavero at the bottom. Very patriotic and stirring language. Broadside with normal folds, a few small edge splits.
