CLARENCE COLES PHILLIPS (1880-1927)
511. Luxite Hosiery. 1919.
9 7/8 x 14 7/8 in./25 x 37.8 cm
Cond A.
An intriguing yearning pervades Phillips’ work for Luxite Hosiery, a precarious blend of sensuality and melancholy, a delicate balance of the carnal and the plaintive. It would be easy to overlook that both women’s stockings and men’s hose are being advertised here, but the product is nearly overshadowed by the literally unspoken narrative of the poster’s players. The first line of copy in the design would seem to hint at the truth as it reads, "The translucent shimmer of Luxite Hosiery half reveals and half conceals.” The frisson of the poster is undeniable: A convalescing WWI officer in a wheelchair, his caregiver–or significant other–pointing to a recuperative future, with her assuredness abetted by her Luxite hosiery.
