1803 $10 Capped Bust. Small reverse stars. The Philadelphia Mint struck an estimated 15,017 1803 capped bust eagles from a single obverse die and several different reverse dies. The reverses are known with Small Stars and Large Stars. One variety for the Large Stars has faint traces of a fourteenth star punched into a cloud! A lustrous, well preserved example with some light marks on the lower obverse field and affecting the first three stars whose outer points are poorly formed. The reverse, on the other hand, is noteworthy for its abundant luster, crisp detail (including stars) and mostly well-formed clouds (except those at the right that lie opposite a high point of the Liberty bust on the other side). It is always heartwarming to be able to offer such a choice 1803 early Eagle. (#8565)
