<b>Black History</b><hr><b>Scarce Print on Plate of an African American Beggar</b>

<b>c. 1860s Staffordshire Plate with Blue Transfer Print of an African American Beggar, Choice Very Fine.</b>
8" diameter white Staffordshire plate with pale blue transfer print, with a title and caption: “Not more than others I deserve / Yet God hath given me more / For I have food while others starve / Or beg from door to door." The central image is of a barefoot African American sitting in front of a wooden fence, with a dog on a chain and a hat on the ground, extending his hand to a small gentleman wearing a tophat and carrying a cane. To the lower left of the tophat figure is a stone marked “William" (perhaps Prince William, the originator of the quote). Maker’s mark on center of bottom: an impressed asterisk. Plate with modest wear and surface crackling, but very interesting print--scarce to find this subject matter on Staffordshire.
