<b>Black History</b><hr><b>1848 Petition to Recover The 'Negro Boy Ben.'</b>
Manuscript Document, being the petition for a new trial in case regarding ownership of the 'Negro Boy Ben.' 6 pages, five measuring 6.75' x 12', the last 6.75' x 7.25', Harrison County, Texas, May 1848. Very Fine - fastened at top with brass bracket; two filing slits also at top margin; with three leaves partially separated at the bottom fold and a few nicks and tears at edges, but clear and bold throughout. Here one Wiley Pridgen asks that a new trial be granted in Strickland Vs. Pridgen, in which the jury ruled that Hardy Strickland legally bought PridgenÕs 'Boy Ben', a slave worth $1,250: Pridgen claims no payments were exchanged between them, and offers reasons why the case should be heard again. The court agrees, and grants a new trial.
