Lot 507: Large Wedgewood Ceramic Plate
Black History
Large Wedgewood “Am I Not A Man And A Brother” Ceramic Plate, Mint condition.
8.5” in diameter, typical blue Wedgewood color, with raised white design elements. The central figure is a slave in chains pleading for mercy, a design first seen in the late 1700’s (when it appeared on British “Conder” Tokens -- see elsewhere in this section). The legend “AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER” surrounds the figure in raised blue letters. Josiah Wedgewood was an ardent opponent of slavery, a man who not just believed that slavery was wrong, but who actually made it a tangible part of his business by creating this special plate. We’re unsure of the age of this piece. It is in superb, like-new condition and is either of recent manufacture or has been carefully preserved over the years. Either way, it is a fantastic display piece that features one of the most dramatic and enduring images from the time when slavery poisoned much of the world.
