Throughout his illustrative life, Penfield “incorporated coaches in some of his Harpers’ posters, as well as in the work for other clients. Studying coach design and history was a favorite hobby, and he later became a collector of these vehicles, and wrote about them for Outing. The unfinished manuscript of a book on coaches survives among his family papers” (Penfield, p. 13). This attraction to early vehicular transport wends its way across the next four decorative panels, titled “Country Carts Series #1,” no doubt part of a larger portfolio devoted to horse drawn conveyance. Though Penfield renders every horse and driver with masterful surety, it’s his attention to detail–in this particular case to the finer points of the Exercising, Hackney, Kentucky Breaking and Meadow Brook carts–that makes him a superior chronicler of his time.
