c. 1795 Anti-Slavery Token “Am I Not A Man & A Brother” in Copper, Gem Prooflike Uncirculated.
Dalton & Hamer Middlesex 1037. Lettered Edge: “PAYABLE IN DUBLIN OR LONDON”. Glossy brown, with gorgeous, prooflike surfaces. Prooflike and choice. This is the variety with OPPRESSION misspelled as OPRESSION. This popular theme was reused in a different version on the 1838 U.S. Hard Times Token (Low-54) to show a kneeling woman with the legend “Am I Not A Woman & A Sister” surrounding. This token is listed following Low 54A in Rulau’s book on Hard Times Tokens. The last example (of two) that we’ve handled sold in our February 2002 sale for $1,380!
