Black History
15 Postcards depicting African Americans from the Turn of the Century, Average Very Fine
The fifteen postcards, of which thirteen are color depictions and two are black-and-white, conveying images of African Americans and early 1900s stereotypes and prejudices against them. One postcard depicts a young Black child holding a slice of watermelon, with the poem under him reading, “At eating melon I can put a pig to shame. For watermelon am my middle name.” Other postcards depict life in the cotton fields, while another depicts a large family in front of a make-shift log cabin. The message written on the card by a young woman to her aunt describes the children as “unusually neat and clean (as to clothes).” The dates on the eight postmarked postcards range from 1906 to 1932; the balance of the cards are postally unused.
