1865-S $5 Liberty. For decades the 1865-S half eagle was an underrated coin until author David Akers noted this date usually is found in grades of Fine to Very Fine. Breen confirmed in his 1988 encyclopedia that as a date, the 1865-S is "prohibitively rare above VF; unknown above EF" which will give collectors some guidance as to the opinion of experts of this date in high grade. We note in the NGC Population Report does include a cluster of AU55 examples, and another cluster in AU-58. Above that only a few have been graded Mint State. Clearly we have a large number of resubmittals here, and this has skewed the population figures. Choice, scarce, and obviously desirable. (#8299)
