1810 $5 Capped Draped Bust. Large date, large 5. The centers have natural toned gold patina. A well struck example in this still highly collectable grade that has frosty luster and choice if not exquisitely preserved surfaces. The devices were struck with enough force and energy by the dies that most design elements show boldly, including the stars. Notice on the final star on the right (star #13) how there is a tiny nick in one of the outer points. This is believed to be intentionally done, some people suggesting it was a trademark of the coin's designer, John Reich, who worked at the mint until 1813. The reason for this supposition is that the little nick, which appears on all half eagle obverses during Reich's tenure, abruptly stops after he left the mint. (#8108)
