1810 $5 Capped Draped Bust. Large date, large 5. One of the finest attractively graded of this popular date, this one has glorious light greenish to yellow-gold hues over frosty mint bloom. A few faint marks can be seen to the left of the eagle but these in no way inhibit the eye-appeal. The reverse rim is uneven as the planchet must have been slightly off center when the coin was struck, imparting heavy rim denticles at the lower left but leaving the right side and lower right virtually free of a rim. Rarely are the early half eagles found in such a lovely condition, as most circulated. To locate a near gem is quite exciting, and this is borne out by the NGC Population Report, which notes 26 graded this high and just 5 coins graded higher as MS-65. On this variety, the 5 in the denomination is quite large, and the dentils had to be engraved very low in order to not touch the long loop of this digit. A tempting specimen for the specialist.
