ANONYMOUS
493. Sun Valley/Gretchen Fraser. ca. 1948.

Alex Taylor, NYC
Cond A-/Slight tears at edges.
In the late 1930s, Averell Harriman developed Sun Valley as a show stop for the the Union Pacific railroad, intended to rival the luxury of St. Moritz. Somewhat ironically, it would be an Olympic champion from the 1948 St. Moritz Winter Games who would provide the photomontage pep to encourage ski mavens to travel to the Idaho resort. And in an age where the human interest segments get more air time during the televised Olympics than actual the athletic events, Gretchen Fraser’s story is truly one worth telling. Initially, Fraser was named to the 1940 Olympic team, but the games were canceled because of World War II. The following year, she won the national downhill and Alpine combined championships in 1941 and was national slalom champion in 1942. Astoundingly, at the age of twenty-three, she retired from competition in order to teach riding, skiing, and swimming to amputee war veterans in Army hospitals while her husband–himself a member of the 1936 Olympic ski team–served in the Navy. After the war, he urged her to get back into competition and even acted as her trainer. She was named to the 1948 Olympic team and became the first American skier ever to win a medal.
