WALTER VAN DER VEN (1884-1923)
492. VIIe Olympiade/Anvers. 1920.

For the 1920 games in Antwerp, Belgium, a discus thrower appears ready to try to clear the tower of Antwerp’s Notre Dame Cathedral and the city limits in one mighty heave. The city’s coat of arms and intertwined flags of various countries frame the scene. This is the larger of two formats, and it shows a more muscular figure than the smaller one. The poster was printed in 17 different language editions, each one by a different Belgian printer: a French/Flemish version (mentioning the Belgian state railway) and one in Greek by Goosens of Brussels; Chinese by Van Dieren of Antwerp; this French version and a Russian variant by Stockmans of Antwerp and so on. Strangely enough, the official Olympic poster book indicates that one Martha van Kuyck (b. 1881) was the “creator” of this poster while Van der Ven was the “Belgian sketcher.” But his signature alone appears in all versions.
