ANONYMOUS
491. Exposition Franco-Britannique. 1908.

Bemrose & Sons, London
Cond A-/Slight crease at bottom edge.
This poster for a Franco-British track and field warm-up exhibition proir to the 1908 London Olympics not only features the Rubanesque embodiments of the two nations competitive spirits, but also the Great Stadium at Shepherd’s Bush, visible at right, complete with its infield swimming pool and cinder track. You have to wonder what the contemporary, television-minded short attention span would have done in the face of the 1908 Olympiad’s duration. Consider this: most people felt that the two weeks of the Salt Lake City games was just long enough, perhaps even a bit too long. Well, this 1908 event ran for over three months–July 13th through October 29th. And that’s without protests over the veracity of French judges.
