A 4-page letter from Mary Spaulding to her cousin Martha, September 28, 1862, no place (Vermont), 8' x 5' , Very Fine. The top of the first page is illustrated with an angel, George Washington, the state seal of Vermont, and a flag; above is 'The War For The Union / Vermont.' A Reagles & Co. imprint is at the top edge of the paper. The letter says, in part: '...times are pretty hard here and I guess they will keep on growing worse, it seems to me this war never will end, at any rate till every man is killed, there has a great many gone about here, and some have gone never to return....Uncle Nathan you do not think so much of Mr. Lincoln as you did the fall you was here do you? I think he does about as well as he can, considering the place he is in....' Minor soiling; one edge split on second sheet and partial split at seam of the two sheets, the latter affecting nothing.
