Black History
1844 Receipt For Taxes Paid On Slaves And Other Property, Choice Extremely Fine
Partly Printed Receipt, 3” x 6.5.” State of Mississippi, Adams County Property Tax Receipt, dated 1844. Green paper with majority of handwriting in green ink. Noting receipt of “Seventeen 03/100 dollars” from A. A. Lacoste, “being the amount of State and County Tax for 1844, as assessed: On Pianos, value $100 ... On Watches, value $75 ... On Gold and Silver, value $25 ... On 7 Slaves.” This document is clear evidence of the low esteem in which slaves were held, for it indicates that they were thought of as taxable property rather than as human beings. In fact, they are listed alongside Bowie Knives and Cattle, further indication of their diminished status.
